U.S. VP Vance Lands in Armenia on Peace Mission

(MENAFN) US Vice President JD Vance landed in Yerevan Monday, launching a critical two-day diplomatic mission to the South Caucasus region aimed at cementing fragile peace agreements between longtime rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The vice president and his spouse Usha Vance touched down at Zvartnots Airport, state outlet Armenpress confirmed, marking the highest-level American visit to the former Soviet republic in recent memory.

Official confirmation of the February 9-10 visit came from Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's office earlier this week. "This evening, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will meet with the US Vice President, after which they will make statements," the state agency reported.

Vance's diplomatic swing through the strategically vital region extends through February 11 and includes stops in both Armenia and Azerbaijan, the US State Department disclosed Saturday. The mission will "advance President (Donald) Trump's peace efforts and promote the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP)," according to the official media note.

The visit builds on momentum from last August's landmark White House summit, where President Trump brokered a historic declaration between Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on August 8. That agreement ended decades of bitter territorial disputes, committing both nations to cease military hostilities, restore transit corridors, and pursue diplomatic normalization.

Central to the TRIPP infrastructure initiative is a planned transportation corridor connecting mainland Azerbaijan with its isolated Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory.

Tangible progress has emerged in recent weeks, with Azerbaijan completing several petroleum product shipments to Armenia—the inaugural delivery occurred in late December—signaling genuine momentum toward reconciliation between the South Caucasus neighbors after years of armed conflict.
